The birthplace of this very special French mustard is the town of Meaux, sixty kilometers from Paris. The original recipe dates back to the year 1632. Throughout the centuries it is been indicated as the world’s best mustard; it was the favorite mustard of the French Royal house. In 1760 a clergy dignitary revealed the recipe to a member of the Pommery family. Since then the Pommery family has kept the recipe a close guarded secret.

The specialty of mustard from Meaux lies mostly in its medium strength and whole grain mustard seeds which according to the tradition must make up at least 18% of the weight of the finished product. The overall medium-strength of the mustard is probably due to secret aromatic herbs blended à l'ancienne (the ancient way); meaning the Pommery’s way. The end result is a wholesome, somewhat mild, flavorful and unique mustard; so good that it can be eaten with a spoon.
